Baril Ancestors

The Baril in North America (see the US Distribution) have at least two separate origins.

Saintonge, France

Most of the Baril in North America seem to all descend from an ancestor who came to the Nouvelle France around 1665. This ancestor is:

Jean Baril, born between 1646 and 1649 most likely in Saintonge, France. He died on 9 Feb 1724 in Batiscan, QC and was buried on 10 Feb 1724 in Batiscan, QC. He married three times:

  • First to Marie Guillet, daughter of Pierre Guillet dit Lajeunese and of Jeanne de St-Père, about 1674 in Batiscan, Québec. They had three children including my ancestor Louis born around 1678.
  • Then to Elisabeth Gagnon with whom he had 8 children
  • And again to Catherine Dessureaux and had 7 more children.
Of his 15 sons, 10 married and had children giving a good start to the Baril name in the new world.

Little is know of the origins of Jean. His indentured labour contract and his first marriage contract were tragically lost when fire destroyed the early colonial archives in Québec city. With them went the only hope in North America of accurately identifying his parents and parish of origin in France.

Havre, France

Several thousand more Baril live in southern Louisiana and are descendants of a second ancestor that came from France in the early 1800s. This ancestor is:

Juan Edwardo (Edward) Baril, son of Victor Baril And Juana Delmonte, born ca 1801, Havre,
France, Married Delphine Burat (Buras) 18 December 1824 ( St Louis Catheral, New Orleans) daughter of Pierre Jean Pierre Burat and Marie Louise Colett ( Colette). Marie-Louise was born ca 1810 and died 23 May 1898. Edwardo died 13 September 1869 at the age of 68.

Their descendants are all from Plaquemines Parish, LA.  They used a New Orleans Church for Baptisms as there was no church in the Plaquemines Parish until the 1840's.
