Gordon Arthur Lentz (1929-2002)December 6, 2002, Chicago Tribune Gordon Arthur Lentz, 73, of Homewood-Flossmoor, IL. From 1955 to 1995, Mr. Lentz conducted space research at the Enrico Fermi Institute, Laboratory for Astrophysics and Space Research, at the University of Chicago. He traveled extensively throughout the US, South America, Europe, and Russia, calibrating and integrating scientific instruments for unmanned space exploration projects such as Pioneer 11, Britain's Giotto, and Russia's Vega I and Vega II. His work on the cosmic ray experiment was aboard virtually every unmanned spacecraft that NASA deployed during the golden age of space research, when competition to have one's experiment aboard a spacecraft was fierce. He is survived by his children, Brian Lentz, Martin Lentz, and Kirsten (Ezra) Lentz;sister Arlene (Gordon) Turner; grandchildren Michele (David) Krewson, Ashley Lentz, Tabitha Lentz, Haagen Lentz, Aaron Lentz, Arrik Lentz, Matthew DiBattista; and great-grandchildren Destiny Krewson, and Taylor Epperson; and many, many loving friends and colleagues throughout the world. He will be sorely missed. A graveside service will be held at Homewood Memorial Gardens 600 Ridge Road (East of Halsted) on Saturday, December 7, at 10:00am. (708) 798-0055.
