Dr. George Kenneth Yates, 76, of 317 Ivystone Drive, formerly of Keowee Key and Westford, Mass., died Tuesday Aug. 13, 2002, at Brighton Gardens.

Born in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late George Sidney and Florence Schlicter Yates.

Dr. Yates was a graduate of Harvard University and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He also was a graduate of Suffolk University Law School. Dr Yates was a nuclear physicist with the United States Air Force Geophysics Laboratory in Bedford, Mass., retiring in 1989. He had been an adjunct professor at Clemson University in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Dr. Yates was a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve, and saw active duty in Italy during World War II. Dr. Yates was recognized as an authority on the 47th Foot regiment, a unit of the British military during the American Revolution. He was a member of Sigma XI, Phi Delta Phi, The Society for Military History, and the Society for Army, Historical Research.

Survivors include his wife, Gale S. Pemberton, of the home; four sons, George Henry Yates and his wife Nancy, of Maynard, Mass., Charles Edward Yates and John Ward Yates, both of Mountain View, Calif., James Frederick Yates and his wife Heidi, of Clinton, Mass.; a daughter, Deborah-Anne J. Beagley, of Nashua, N.H.; and nine grandchildren, George Charles, Michael and Robin Yates of Maynard, Mass., Jeffrey, Kendall and Holly Yates of Clinton, Mass., and Danielle, John C. and Joseph Kenneth Beagley of Nashau, N.H. His sister; Annabelle Y. Tucker of Camillus, N.Y.; and his former wife, Ada Yates, of Harvard, Mass., also survive him.

Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
