TENTH GENERATION
Paul Jean Bertrand dit St-Arnaud was born on 27 Nov 1661 in
Ste-Madeline de Verneuil-sur Havre, Normandie, Pays d'Ouche, Perche
France. He died on 27 Jul 1739 in Ste-Genevieve de Batiscan.
He was married to Gabrielle Baribeau on 3 Jun 1697 in St-Francois
Xavier de Batiscan.
Present at the marriage
of Paul Bertrand and Gabrielle Baribeau were Paul's fellow soldiers,
Francois DuMontie, surgeon Jean Baradat, Antoine Brule, Jean-Baptiste
Papillau. Jean Grimart, pioneer of Batiscan, who was also present
at the marriage of Gabrielle and Guillaume and a friend of both the
Baribeau's and Bertrand's. The marriage ceremony took place in the
home of Gabrielle's father, Francois, one of the main inhabitants
of Batiscan. Gabrielle had two children, François and Louis
Bellec from her previous marriage to Guillaume Bellec. Paul Jean Bertrand
settled on the Batiscan River in 1697, early records of the family
are from the parish of St-Francois-Xavier (1682) , the first church
of the town and later in the parish of Ste-Genevieve-de-Batiscan (starting
in 1727).

, PQ. She died on 2 Mar 1725 in Batiscan , PQ. Paul and
Gabrielle had 8 children,
2 boys, 4 girls and 2 other children that died shortly after birth.
ELEVENTH GENERATION
Jean Bertrand was born between 1630 and 1640 in Normandie,
Region of Pays d'Ouche, Perche, France. He was married to Marie Nees
between 1658 and 1660 in Verneuil-sur Avre , Parish of Sainte-Madeleine.
Jean Bertrand and Marie Nee(s) had at least one another child, named
Jean. Being named after the father one can assume that he was the first
born. I can find no records of Jean at this point other than he
left property to his brother Paul Jean in his will. Paul was assumed
dead in New France during the settlement of Jean's estate in Verneuil-sur-Avre.
Eventually Paul Jean gave up his claim to his brothers estate because
of the cost of lawyer fees and comissions of go-betweens envolved in
settlement and travel between Canada and France. It was becoming an
exercise of diminishing returns and Paul left it to the decisions made
by his brother's daughter who eventually had to sell the bulk of her
fathers estate for taxes (and again lawyers) by selling it to an order
of nuns in Verneuil. What it does bring to light is that Paul had a
brother and the brother a daughter who may have continued the Bertrand
family in France.
Marie Nees was born between 1630 and 1640 in Normandie, Region of Pays
d'Ouche, Perche, France. Jean Bertrand and Marie Nees had two sons,
Jean Bertrand and Paul Jean Bertrand dit St-Arnaud (our ancestor).
